Home Treatment for Kidney
Stones
Home treatment for kidney
stones is possible. If you
experience kidney stone symptoms, you
are not alone. Millions of people around the world know
how unbelievably painful passing a kidney stone can be.
But, have no fear, stone-sufferer. Kidney stone relief
may be near, and best of all, in your own
home!
Don’t Grin & Bear
It
Pain doesn’t make you
stronger. Pain only hurts. So, if there are medicines you
can use to dull the pain, go for it. Mediations, such
as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories
(NSAIDs), like
Advil® and
Motrin®, are
available over the counter, without a prescription. If the pain
is unbearable, talk to your physician, and they may prescribe
you stronger pain medicine if necessary.
Water, Water
Everywhere
Many would argue the
best home treatment for kidney stones is water. When
passing a kidney stone, you need to keep yourself
hydrated. Try drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water a day.
Basically, you want to keep your urine clear and clean in
order to flush kidney
stones out of your
system.
Avoid Grapefruit
Juice!
Oh, and since we are on
the topic of liquids, DO NOT drink grapefruit juice.
Grapefruit juice may increase your risk for developing
stones.
Collect Your Kidney
Stones
Your doctor may ask you
to keep your stones when they finally pass. Well, what
did you think that nifty strainer your doctor gave you
was for? Urinate through the strainer and save any
stones, including the tiny ones that look like gravel.
(If you don’t have a strainer, a coffer filter will do
just fine.) Do this for three days until the pain
subsides. Keep the stones in a glass or plastic container
and bring them to your doctor. A medical professional can
determine what kind of stones you passed. This knowledge
may help prevent kidney stones in the future.
Eat Your Fruits &
Veggies
Take advantage of all
the wonderful vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates fresh
fruits and green, leafy vegetables offer. However, with
that in mind, stay away from fruits and vegetables with
large amounts of Vitamin C and D. And watch your oxalate
intake by eating low-oxalate foods, like
plain yogurt, apples, watermelon, egg noodles, and green
peas.
Exercise
It can be said that
exercise cleanses the body and mind. It also can be said
that exercise is a great home treatment for
kidney stones. Exercise assists with the
passage of calcium out of the bloodstream and into the
bones. This leads to healthier bones and much less stone
formation in the urinary tract. And always remember to
keep yourself hydrated during exercise
sessions.
There is no argument that kidney stones can be
very difficult to deal with. However, with exercise,
water and a healthy diet, your kidney stones and the
horrible pain they cause soon will be a thing of the
past.
